protein-tyrosine kinase

protein-tyrosine kinase
pro·tein-ty·ro·sine ki·nase (proґtēn tiґro-sēn kiґnās) [EC 2.7.10] a group comprising the protein kinases that catalyze the phosphorylation of tyrosine residues in specific proteins. It is subdivided into the receptor protein-tyrosine kinases and the non-specific protein tyrosine kinases (qq.v.). The enzymes play a variety of roles in the control of cell growth and differentiation. Many of the known oncogenes and proto-oncogenes involved in cancer encode protein-tyrosine kinases, and unregulated activation of these enzymes can lead to oncogenesis as well as to various benign proliferative conditions.
