delayed hypersensitivity

delayed hypersensitivity
de·layed hypersensitivity di-.lād- n hypersensitivity (as in a tuberculin test) which is mediated by T cells and in which the typical symptoms of inflammation and induration appear in an individual previously exposed to an antigen after an interval of 12 to 48 hours following a subsequent exposure (as by injection of the antigen under the skin)

(DH), delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) a type of hypersensitivity that (in contrast to immediate h.) takes 24 to 72 hours to develop and is mediated by T lymphocytes rather than by antibodies; the term is usually used to denote the subset of type IV hypersensitivity involving cytokine release and macrophage activation, as opposed to direct cytolysis, but can be used more broadly, even sometimes being used synonymously with type IV h. (q.v.).
