pars petrosa ossis temporalis
[TA] petrous part of temporal bone: a pyramid of dense bone located at the base of the cranium; one of the three parts of the temporal bone, it houses the organ of hearing. Some anatomists divide it into petrous and mastoid subparts and call it the petromastoid part of temporal bone. Called also pyramid of temporal bone.
