pansystolic murmur

pansystolic murmur
a regurgitant murmur that extends throughout systole and is due to blood flow between two chambers normally of very different pressures in systole; the most common causes are mitral or tricuspid regurgitation and ventricular septal defects. Called also holosystolic m.
