systolic murmur

systolic murmur
a cardiac murmur occurring during systole; usually due to mitral or tricuspid regurgitation or to aortic or pulmonary obstruction. These are often distinguished as either ejection or regurgitant murmurs, and on the basis of cardiac cycle timing, they may be classified as early systolic, midsystolic, late systolic, or pansystolic murmurs.

Systolic murmur (SM) in a child with valvular pulmonary stenosis. The phonocardiogram is recorded at the left upper sternal border and also shows an intermittent systolic ejection click (EC) occurring in the expiratory phase of the respiratory cycle. (S2), Second heart sound.
