chronic aggressive hepatitis chronic inflammation of the liver occurring as a sequel to hepatitis B or certain other types of hepatitis, in congenital or acquired hypogammaglobulinemia, or following administration of certain drugs; in some cases an autoimmune mechanism is suspected. It is characterized by infiltration of portal areas by plasma cells and macrophages, piecemeal necrosis from destruction of liver cells, and fibrosis. It runs a variable course; there may be long asymptomatic periods with periods of symptomatic hepatitis and jaundice; there may be a variety of extrahepatic manifestations; or the disease may progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. Called also autoimmune, lupoid, plasma cell, or subacute h. and acute juvenile cirrhosis.
