- chronic persisting hepatitis a chronic, nonprogressive inflammatory process affecting primarily the portal areas without producing fibrosis, necrosis, or cirrhosis, an uncommon sequel of one of the forms of viral hepatitis. It may be asymptomatic or may produce symptoms of mild hepatitis; it does not progress to cirrhosis or liver failure but may persist for years.
