notifiable disease

notifiable disease
a disease that must be reported to the Health Authorities in order that speedy control and preventive action may be undertaken if necessary. In Great Britain such diseases must be notified to the proper officer for the control of communicable diseases (formerly to the Medical Officer of Health). They include diphtheria, dysentery, food poisoning, infective jaundice, malaria, measles, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, typhoid, and whooping cough. The list varies for different countries, and some diseases are internationally notifiable through the World Health Organization; these include cholera, plague, relapsing fever, typhus, and yellow fever.
