thyroxine-binding globulin n a blood serum glycoprotein that is synthesized in the liver and that binds tightly to thyroxine and less firmly to triiodothyronine preventing their removal from the blood by the kidneys and releasing them as needed at sites of activity abbr. TBG called also thyroid-binding globulin

(TBG) a 54-kD acidic glycoprotein that is the main transport protein in the blood for thyroxine (and less firmly, triiodothyronine); it is a serum globulin synthesized by the liver and has electrophoretic mobility intermediate between that of the α1- and α2-globulins.
