thio·bar·bi·tu·ric ac·id (thi″o-bahr″bĭ-tuґrik) a condensation of malonic acid and thiourea, differing from barbituric acid only by the presence of a sulfur atom instead of an oxygen atom at the number 2 carbon; it is the parent compound of a class of drugs, the thiobarbiturates. Thiobarbiturates and barbiturates are analogous in their effects.
