1) the upper and smaller of the two sensory ganglia of the glossopharyngeal nerve that may be absent but when present is situated in a groove in which the nerve passes through the jugular foramen called also jugular ganglion compare INFERIOR GANGLION (1)
2) the upper of the two ganglia of the vagus nerve that is situated at the point where it exits through the jugular foramen called also jugular ganglion, superior vagal ganglion compare INFERIOR GANGLION (2)
