So·la·num (so-laґnəm) [L. “nightshade”] a large genus of plants of the family Solanaceae. It includes the potato, tomato, eggplant, several of the nightshades, and many poisonous and medicinal species. S. carolinenґse L. is a poisonous North American species. S. dimidiaґtum, S. fastigiaґtum, and S. kwebenґse cause crazy cow syndrome respectively in the United States, Brazil, and South Africa. S. malacoxґylon is a South American species that causes enzootic calcinosis in ruminants.
