scala tym·pa·ni -'tim-pə-.nī, -.nē n, pl scalae tym·pa·no·rum -.tim-pə-'nōr-əm, -'nȯr-əm the lymph-filled spirally arranged canal in the bony canal of the cochlea that is separated from the scala media by the basilar membrane, communicates at its upper end with the scala vestibuli, and abuts at its lower end upon the membrane that separates the round window from the middle ear

[TA] the perilymph-filled part of the cochlea that is continuous with the scala vestibuli at the helicotrema, is separated from other cochlear structures by the spiral lamina and the basilar membrane of the cochlear duct, and ends blindly near the fenestra cochleae. Called also tympanic canal of cochlea.
