oxy·ac·id (ok″se-asґid) an acid containing both oxygen and hydrogen atoms. When there are two common oxyacids of the same element, that with the higher oxidation state is designated by the suffix -ic, that with the lower by -ous. When additional oxidation states occur, the prefix hypo- may be used to indicate a lower state and per- to indicate a higher state; see accompanying table. Called also oxo acid and oxacid.
