[USP] cellulose partially oxidized and with a varying content of carboxylic acid groups, which confers some solubility in dilute alkali; it is insoluble in water. Dried in a vacuum over phosphorus pentoxide, it is used as a local hemostatic. Called also absorbable c. and absorbable cotton.
