Mi·cro·bac·te·ri·um (mi″kro-bak-tērґe-əm) [micro- + bacterium] a genus of bacteria of the family Microbacteriaceae, consisting of small diphtheroid, motile or nonmotile, gram-positive rods, found in dairy products; organisms are obligately aerobic, non–spore-forming, and catalase-positive and are characterized by resistance to heat. It is an opportunistic pathogen, causing nosocomial infections in debilitated and immunocompromised patients. The type species is M. lacґticum.
