glomerulonephritis (diffuse, focal, or membranous) associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, marked by deposition of antigen-antibody complexes in the mesangium and basement membrane. The clinical course is highly variable and depends in part on the morphological findings, which have been classified into five subgroups by the World Health Organization.
