(IBS), irritable colon syndrome a common, chronic, noninflammatory condition characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation or both), but no detectable pathologic change; there may be spasms of the intestinal muscles. A variant form is characterized by painless diarrhea. It is usually due to a combination of psychologic and physiologic factors. Called also irritable or spastic colon.
