inflammation of the mammary gland of a cow, usually due to an infectious agent such as a bacterium or fungus. Common bacterial pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus (see staphylococcal m.), Streptococcus agalactiae, other species of streptococci, and coliform bacteria (see coliform m.). The milk from infected cows may be watery or serous with clots or flakes and clear or brownish in color. Called also garget.
