throm·box·ane (throm-bokґsān) [thrombocyte + oxane ring] either of two compounds related to prostaglandins and derived from arachidonic acid. Thromboxane A2 (TXA2) is an extremely potent inducer of platelet aggregation and platelet release reactions and is also a vasoconstrictor; it is thus a physiologic antagonist of prostacyclin. It is synthesized by platelets and is very unstable, with a half-life of 30 seconds, undergoing nonenzymatic hydrolysis to thromboxane B2 (TXB2), which is inactive.
