Laminaria

Laminaria
A small rod-shaped piece of dried seaweed; when placed within the cervix, a laminaria causes it to gradually dilate (widen). The species of seaweed serving this purpose is Laminaria digitata.

La·mi·na·ria (lam″ĭ-narґe-ə) a genus of seaweeds (kelps), various species of which are used as sources of alginates; see laminarin. L. digitaґta yields dry stems that are hydrophilic and gradually swell in moist environments, so that they can be used to dilate the uterine cervix in induced abortion.
