A sulfonamide related chemically to sulfisoxazole, with a similar antibacterial spectrum, but a slower rate of absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and urinary excretion.

sul·fa·meth·ox·a·zole (sul″fə-məth-okґsə-zōl) [USP] a sulfonamide used as an antibacterial active against various gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, especially for the treatment of acute urinary tract infections, and as an antiprotozoal; administered orally, usually in combination with another agent such as trimethoprim.
