- the part of the lung distal to a single terminal bronchiole; it is the anatomical and functional unit of the lung and consists of a respiratory bronchiole, two or more alveolar ducts, and alveoli. Called also primary lobule of lung, pulmonary acinus, and transitional and respiratory zone. See Plate 43.
