emphysematous pyelonephritis
a rare, life-threatening complication of acute pyelonephritis, in which gas collects in the renal collecting system and parenchyma and may cause necrosis; seen in diabetics with gas produced by lactose-fermenting bacteria, in ureteral obstruction, and in certain other conditions.
