antigen presentation

antigen presentation
the ingesting and partial digestion of antigens by macrophages, which then present the processed antigen on their surfaces to B and T lymphocytes. (See antigen-presenting cells, under cell.) The presented antigen is more immunogenic than unprocessed antigen, possibly because it has been broken down into pieces more easily recognized by B and T cells, because it remains on the surface of the presenting cell for a long time, or because it is presented in association with self MHC antigen and thus able to stimulate helper T cells.
