- extravasation of mucus into the surrounding connective tissue from a damaged minor salivary gland excretory duct, followed by an inflammatory reaction leading to the formation of a pool of macrophages and mucin surrounded by a wall of granulation tissue; visible as a small nodule or vesicle on the oral mucosa. Called also mucocele. Cf. mucus retention cyst, under cyst.
