ameboid movement

ameboid movement
movement characteristic of amebae and leukocytes by extension of the plasma membrane to form a balloonlike pseudopodium that attaches to the substrate and into which the cytosol flows, moving the cell forward. Movement is accompanied by cyclic changes in the viscosity of the cytosol that result from the assembly and severing of actin filaments, with the leading edge of the pseudopodium being a gel and the cytoplasm flowing into the pseudopod being a sol.
