atypical measles

atypical measles
a severe form of measles occurring after exposure to wild measles virus in those who previously received inactivated (killed) measles vaccine (a type used in the United States and elsewhere in the mid-1960s), or in some cases live attenuated measles vaccine. It is characterized by fever, headache, myalgia, abdominal symptoms, and cough; this is followed by an atypical rash that may be urticarial, vesicular, petechial, or maculopapular, is found on the wrists and ankles, spreads to the palms, soles, and trunk, and later fades; there may be peripheral edema, interstitial pulmonary infiltrates, and pleural effusion. Koplik spots are absent.
