benign lymphoepithelial lesion
enlargement of the salivary glands, which sometimes become tender, with infiltration of the parenchyma by polyclonal B cells and T cells, atrophy of acini, and formation of lymphoepithelial islands; usually seen in middle-aged women associated with Sjцgren syndrome, but also seen in a number of collagen disorders. The lesion is usually benign but may be associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Called also benign lymphoepithelial sialadenopathy and formerly called Mikulicz disease. When it occurs in combination with lacrimal gland enlargement, it is now called Mikulicz syndrome (q.v.).
