geometric isomerism

geometric isomerism
an old division of stereoisomerism that contains isomers that differ in the arrangement of substituents of a rigid structure, such as double-bonded carbon atoms or a ring. The cis isomer has two referenced groups on the same side of the ring or double bond; the trans isomer on opposite sides. Geometric isomers are thus diastereomers. Called also cis-trans i.
