adrenocortical insufficiency
abnormally diminished secretion of corticosteroids by the adrenal cortex. Acute adrenocortical i. is another name for addisonian crisis and primary or chronic adrenocortical i. is another name for Addison disease. Secondary adrenocortical (or adrenal) insufficiency is any type caused by dysfunction of the pituitary or hypothalamus, with low plasma levels of cortisol and often of corticotropin. Called also hypoadrenocorticism, hypocorticalism, and hypocorticism.
