inorganic pyrophosphatase

inorganic pyrophosphatase
in·or·gan·ic py·ro·phos·pha·tase (in″or-ganґik pi″ro-fosґfə-tās) [EC 3.6.1.1] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the cleavage of pyrophosphate into two phosphate molecules. The enzyme is present in all cells and regulates the concentration of endogenous pyrophosphate. Specificity varies with the source and with the activating metal ion. The enzyme from some sources may be identical with alkaline phosphatase or with glucose-6-phosphatase. In official nomenclature, the preferred name is now inorganic diphosphatase.
