- a group of drugs that competitively inhibit the enzyme hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis; used to lower plasma lipoprotein levels in treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia. Called also statins.
