S-(hydroxymethyl)glutathione dehydrogenase

S-(hydroxymethyl)glutathione dehydrogenase
S-(hy·droxy·meth·yl)·glu·ta·thi·one de·hy·dro·gen·ase (hi-drok″se-meth″əl-gloo″tə-thiґōn de-hiґdro-jən-ās) [EC 1.1.1.284] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the conversion of S-(hydroxymethyl)glutathione, a complex formed spontaneously from formaldehyde and glutathione, to S-formylglutathione, using NAD+ or NADP+ as an electron acceptor. The human enzyme belongs to the family of zinc-dependent alcohol dehydrogenases, and the reaction is part of the pathway that detoxifies formaldehyde. Formerly called formaldehyde dehydrogenase (glutathione).
