dominant hemisphere
the cerebral hemisphere that is more concerned than the other in the integration of sensations and the control of many functions, such as speech and language and the preferential use of one or the other of paired organs in voluntary movements. The hemisphere opposite to the handedness of the individual, i.e., the left cerebral hemisphere in right-handed persons, and vice versa, is the dominant one for many functions, but the left hemisphere is usually dominant for speech and language functions regardless of handedness.
