avidin
A glycoprotein, obtained from egg whites, which possesses a high affinity for biotin. Labeled a. is allowed to bind to biotin-tagged antibodies in order to amplify antigen-antibody reactions that may be difficult to visualize. Ingestion of a. can cause a biotin deficiency. av·i·din (avґĭ-din) a protein from egg whites that binds biotin, rendering it unavailable for absorption and resulting in biotin deficiency if large quantities of raw egg whites are ingested. Because binding is strong and specific, it has been used in biochemical assays (see biotinylation).
