as·a·fet·i·da (as″ə-fetґĭ-də) the oily gum-resin obtained from the roots of Ferula asafoetida L. and other related species of Umbelliferae; the main odorous principle is isobutylpropanyldisulfide. In parts of Asia it is used as a condiment and food flavoring; former uses include application to animal bandages to prevent bandage chewing, and as a carminative, expectorant, and antispasmodic.
