basisphenoid bone

basisphenoid bone
a bone in the floor of the cranium of embryos of many different animal species. In humans, before birth it becomes part of the postsphenoidal part of the sphenoid bone (see under part); in most other animals it persists as a separate bone between the basioccipital bone and the presphenoidal bone.
