postsphenoidal part of sphenoid bone the posterior portion of the sphenoid bone; in the fetus it consists of separate basisphenoid, pterygoid, and alisphenoid parts, first cartilaginous and later bony, which fuse to each other and to the presphenoid part before birth. Called also postsphenoid bone.
