photosynthetic bacterium

photosynthetic bacterium
a bacterium that contains pigments such as bacteriochlorophylls and carotenoids, which enable it to conduct photosynthesis and assimilate carbon dioxide, with or without the production of oxygen. The process depends on the presence of oxidizable electron donors such as water and reduced sulfur compounds. See also Cyanobacteria.
