renal tubular acidosis caused by malfunction of the proximal tubules. Mild forms are often accompanied by bicarbonaturia; severe forms such as Fanconi syndrome may be free of bicarbonaturia but show increased excretion of other solutes. Called also type 2 renal tubular a.
