septic arthritis
infection in a joint. The joint is swollen, hot, and tender, and movement is very restricted and painful. The infecting organism can enter the joint via the bloodstream or from a penetrating injury. Treatment is by arthrotomy or arthroscopy, irrigation of the joint, and antibiotics. If untreated, the articular cartilage is destroyed, leaving a stiff and deformed joint.
