pyogenic granuloma

pyogenic granuloma
a common rapidly growing nodule on the surface of the skin. Resembling a redcurrant or, if large, a raspberry, it is composed of small blood vessels and therefore bleeds readily after the slightest injury. The nodule never becomes malignant and is treated by curettage and cautery; it may recur and require excision.

granuloma pyogenicum a usually solitary polypoid type of capillary hemangioma (which is neither pyogenic nor a true granuloma). The usual location is on the skin or oral mucous membranes; it is often associated with trauma or local irritation, representing a vasoproliferative inflammatory response. It presents as a small papule that enlarges, may pedunculate, and may become infected and ulcerate to release blood or exudate. Called also g. telangiectaticum. See also angiogranuloma.
