- n.a member of a new class of antibiotics - the oxazolidones - that are active against Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA. Linezolid is used to treat pneumonia and soft-tissue infections caused by these organisms. It is administered by mouth or intravenous infusion; the most common side-effects are headache, a metallic taste in the mouth, diarrhoea, and nausea. Trade name: Zyvox.
