- hypoglycaemic unawareness
- a serious condition in which a diabetic patient loses the earliest warning signs of an approaching hypoglycaemic episode. Patients thus may suffer a severe attack, with confusion, seizures, or even coma and death, because they fail to take the necessary measures to abort the episode. The condition is more common in longstanding diabetes and in those who experience many hypoglycaemic episodes. It necessitates a temporary driving ban until awareness can be regained, usually by avoidance of further attacks for a period of time.
