glucagon stimulation test

glucagon stimulation test
a test for phaeochromocytoma not displaying typically high levels of plasma catecholamines. An intravenous bolus of glucagon is administered and the test is positive when there is a threefold increase in plasma catecholamine levels with a consequent rise in blood pressure. Protection from the blood-pressure rise can be given by pretreatment with alpha blockers. This test should not be performed in patients who suffer with angina.
