(in Britain) a statistical review, organized jointly by the
Department of Health and the
Office for National Statistics, providing information about in-patients treated in National Health Service hospitals. The data, based on a sample of episodes of illness (as distinct from individual patients), include diagnosis on discharge or death, duration on the waiting list,
and length of stay. More detailed information, including aspects of therapy while in the hospital, are included in
