Balkan nephropathy

Balkan nephropathy
a type of kidney failure that is prevalent in the former Yugoslavia. The cause is unknown. It is associated with a high incidence of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis or ureter.

Balkan endemic nephropathy a slowly progressive type of chronic interstitial nephritis seen in only in farming villages along the Danube river in the Balkan republics. The cause is unknown and has been attributed to chronic heavy metal poisoning such as with lead or cadmium, poisoning by grains containing the mycotoxins citrinin and ochratoxin A, or other factors. Called also Balkan nephritis.
