xan·thop·ter·in (zan-thopґtər-in) [xantho- + pterin] a yellow pigment from the integument of wasps and hornets and from butterfly wings, which has some hematopoietic activity in anemic animals. It is an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase. See pterin.
