West Nile virus n a single-stranded RNA virus of the genus Flavivirus (species West Nile virus) that causes an illness marked by fever, headache, muscle ache, skin rash, and sometimes encephalitis or meningitis, that is spread chiefly by mosquitoes, and that is closely related to the viruses causing Japanese B encephalitis and Saint Louis encephalitis also west nile fever

a virus of the genus Flavivirus antigenically closely related to the Japanese, Murray Valley, and St. Louis encephalitis viruses; it causes West Nile encephalitis and is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, with wild birds serving as the reservoir. It occurs widely in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and sometimes in the eastern, southern, and midwestern United States.
